No More Shoe Removal at TSA? New Rule Rolls Out in Fall 2025
If you’ve ever scrambled to remove your shoes, belt, and jacket at airport security, this news is going to make your travel day easier. Starting October 1, 2025, the TSA is expanding its streamlined screening process to allow more passengers to keep their shoes on at security checkpoints.
Here’s everything you need to know about this new TSA rule, who qualifies, and how you can benefit from it.
What’s Changing at TSA Checkpoints?
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is rolling out a policy update that lets qualifying passengers skip removing shoes, light jackets, and belts, and allows electronics to stay in bags during security screening. The goal: faster, more comfortable lines without compromising safety.
Initially available through TSA PreCheck®, the expansion will cover:
- TSA PreCheck members
- Global Entry travelers
- U.S. military members
- Children under 17 traveling with enrolled adults
- Certain travelers with disabilities
Implementation begins October 1, 2025 in major airports including:
- Atlanta (ATL)
- Chicago O’Hare (ORD)
- Los Angeles (LAX)
- Additional rollout expected through mid-2026
