Planning a Trip to the UK? Here’s What You Need to Know About the New Entry Requirements

Big changes are coming for travelers heading to the UK, and I want to make sure you’re prepared. The UK is introducing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which will soon be required for visitors from visa-exempt countries—including those traveling for tourism, business, and short stays.

As a travel advisor, I know how frustrating last-minute surprises can be when planning a trip. That’s why I’ve broken down everything you need to know about the UK ETA, so you can travel stress-free.

What Is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a new visa waiver program designed to improve border security while simplifying the entry process. Similar to the US ESTA and EU ETIAS, this digital pre-approval system will be mandatory for many travelers visiting the UK.

Who Needs an ETA?

  • Travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, and others
  • Tourists, business travelers, and short-term visitors
  • It is not required for UK and Irish citizens

When Does the UK ETA Start?

The UK ETA is being rolled out in phases starting in 2025, with full implementation expected by 2025. Make sure to check the latest updates to see when your country is added to the program.

How to Apply for the UK ETA

Applying is simple and can be done online in just a few minutes:

1️⃣ Go to the official UK ETA website: Apply for UK ETA
2️⃣ Fill out the application form with your passport and travel details
3️⃣ Pay the UK ETA fee (expected to be around £10)
4️⃣ Receive your approval electronically—most applications are processed within 48–72 hours

You must have an approved ETA before boarding your flight to the UK.

Why Is This Important for Travelers?

  • Required for travel – Without an ETA, you won’t be allowed to board your flight.
  • Fast and fully digital – No need to visit an embassy; the process is completely online.
  • Valid for multiple trips – Your ETA will cover several visits to the UK over a set period.
