The EU ETIAS Delay Until 2026 – What Travelers Need to Know

If you’ve been planning a trip to Europe, you may have heard about ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System)—the new electronic travel permit for visitors from visa-exempt countries. Originally set to launch in 2024, ETIAS has now been delayed until mid-2026 due to technical challenges.

What Does This Mean for Travelers Like You and Me?

The good news is that if you’re traveling to Europe in 2025 or early 2026, you won’t need to apply for ETIAS before your trip. For now, entry to the Schengen Zone remains the same for U.S., U.K., Canadian, and other visa-exempt travelers.  But once ETIAS launches in 2026, travelers will need to complete a quick online application and pay a €7 fee before entering Europe. This system is similar to the U.S. ESTA program and is meant to enhance security while keeping travel convenient.

Why Was ETIAS Delayed Again?

ETIAS is tied to another new security system called the Entry/Exit System (EES), which will require biometric fingerprint and facial recognition scans for non-EU travelers. The EES rollout has faced delays, pushing ETIAS back yet again. The EU now expects EES to launch in mid-2025, with ETIAS following in 2026.
